New Home Owner Mondays – Tools Every New Home Owner Should Have

by Rachel Laurendeau on October 14, 2013

Welcome to this week’s installment of “New Home Owner Mondays.” As a new home owner, there are a number of tools that you will need to have handy for general maintenance or for basic DIY home improvement projects.

Since tools can be quite an investment, we suggest starting with some of the basics and then building up your collection over time as projects and interest dictate. When shopping for your tools, take the time to hold them to see if they feel comfortable in your hand, are weighted properly for you and are of good, sturdy quality.

Your beginner tool collection should include:

• Flashlight
• Hammer
• Screwdriver set or a multibit screwdriver
• Set of pliers
• Adjustable wrench
• Measuring tape
• Utility knife
• Putty knife
• Hand saw
• Duct tape

Having these basic tools on hand should help you accomplish most of the basic projects that you will need to start out, everything from tightening cabinet doors, to installing shelves and hanging pictures. For more elaborate work that requires skills you have yet to learn, you may want to call in a local home improvement expert or a general contractor who can take care of it for you.
