Choosing the Right Screen Door

screen doors New HavenAh, bliss! I just came in from eating my lunch and soaking up some sunshine on our back deck. Of course, as I sat there, I couldn’t help but make a mental list of a few home improvements we need to scratch off our list this summer.

For one, the French doors leading onto the deck are screaming out for screen doors so that all of that fresh air can waft into the house!

According to the folks at Clinton Glass, the screen door experts in Connecticut, there are quite a few different options when it comes to screen doors: “sliding screen doors, pull-down screen doors, storm screen doors, retractable screen doors, fine mesh screens and even dog screen doors.” How are we supposed to choose one when there are so many options?

For starters, where will you be putting the screen door?
• Porch
• Sunroom
• Patio or deck
• Backdoor
• French doors
• Sliding doors

Then, consider what type of use it will get and what it needs to stand up to:
• Do you have pets (or small children) pushing against the screen meaning you need a more durable nylon mesh?
• Do you live on the waterfront or on a gravel road? In that case, a finer mesh would help to keep the sand, dust and sand fleas out of the house.
• Does anyone in your household need a barrier-free door? In that case, you will be looking for a flat bottom wheelchair accessible screen door.
• Do you have an amazing view out your windows that you want to ensure remains clear and unobstructed? In that case, retractable door screens are likely the way to go.

Consider all of your answers and then talk to a screen door expert to find out exactly what they recommend for your home. What a lovely summer home improvement to check off your list!
