Geothermal Systems – Moving Toward More Sustainable Living

How do geothermal systems work?
The earth absorbs about half of the sun’s solar energy and, depending upon what geographic region you live in, maintains an almost constant temperature of 50°F to 70°F. A geothermal heating and cooling system uses an underground loop system which utilizes the earth’s constant temperature to exchange energy between your home and the earth as needed for heating and cooling.

Although the initial installation of a geothermal system can be costly, according to the experts at Allied Services Inc., “a typical Dayton home can save between $600 and $1,200 annually. That’s a savings of up to 60% over a conventional heating and cooling system.” Price of installation depends on a number of variables so you would need to do a cost-benefit analysis to find out how long it would take for your system to pay for itself. Beyond the dollar value, you should also take into consideration the intrinsic value of using a renewable resource to hear and cool your home.
