Bringing a Touch of Nature Into Your Bathroom

In many homes, the bathroom is more than just a functional place for bathing, grooming and other human necessities – it’s a retreat from the stresses of the outside world (or even the noisy kids in the family room).  Whether you’re searching for an entirely new bathroom design, or are just trying to create a new look without a complete overhaul, consider adding a touch of nature to bring in a sense of peace and harmony.

Natural Design Elements

What better way to let in some fresh air and natural light than with a remote controlled, vented skylight?  Another way to enjoy the outdoors from the inside is to position a bird feeder right outside an exterior wall window.  In warmer weather, song birds can often be heard chirping away; and in winter, watching a bright red cardinal against a snowy backdrop is a relaxing sight.

Stroll through any home improvement store, and you’ll likely see all sorts of natural design elements, from faux stone wall tiles and granite vanities to wood trim and organic wall panels.  Ask your bathroom remodeling contractor about the many benefits of bamboo or cork flooring – one of which is their resistance to mold and mildew.  Using one or more of these natural items as a design base will make it easier to accessorize your bathroom with the same natural theme.

Natural Accessories

Here’s where the fun begins.  If you’re short on space, go vertical.  Hang up a framed picture of a graceful fern leaf or place a small, silk plant on top of the toilet tank.  A simple stone bowl filled with shells or river rocks can instantly add a connection to the earth.  If you have a larger bathroom, fill a prominent corner with a tall, live plant, or use a group of smaller plants on a window sill.  Free standing fountains come in all shapes and sizes, and are a great way to add a soothing background sound.

Natural Colors

One of simplest ways to incorporate the feel of nature into your bathroom is to choose an appropriate paint color with shades of sage green, sand or slate gray.  Complement the color scheme by arranging rolled up bath towels in a large wicker basket or installing a matching backsplash over the sink.
