Custom Hutch for Your Kitchen Remodel

Many of us, especially those who have older homes, could use more storage space in our kitchens. Aside from keeping your kitchen as organized as possible, you may want to consider adding some permanent storage options with a custom built-in hutch.

The wonderful thing about having a custom hutch built for your kitchen is that you can tailor it to your exact storage needs and the space you have available for it in your kitchen. There’s nothing wrong with purchasing a ready-made hutch, but it doesn’t allow you to take advantage of every square inch of space you have available. A custom hutch will.

Interview your local kitchen remodeling professionals until you find one that also is able to handle carpentry and custom woodworking jobs to make sure you will get the results you want.

Figure out which wall in your kitchen will best accommodate your new built-in and then you’ll have an idea of how to figure out the dimensions and storage options to include in the hutch.

You can customize the storage however you like; usually a hutch has a combination of drawers, shelves, or cabinets and a countertop of some sort.

Three drawers are often typical for hutches. Plan their size according to what you want to store in them. Silverware, linens, and spare pots and pans are all good candidates to be stored in the drawers.

If you have the space, you can have four cabinets added to your hutch with an upper and lower cabinet on the right and left side of the hutch. Be creative with your design. For example you could choose to have the upper cabinets fitted with glass doors so that you can showcase your dishes or pottery. Or you could have solid doors with some special carving added to the doors. You could forgo all those designs and go with a completely modern design. Be sure to consult with your kitchen renovation expert if you’d like some design suggestions.

The upper part of a hutch often incorporates some open shelving in the middle. If you’d like, you can instead have this space fitted to hold a TV or microwave that you might otherwise store on your kitchen counter.

Consider what material you want the hutch countertop to be made from. It can be made from the same wood as the rest of the cabinet, or you can add a special touch and fit it with a marble or granite countertop.

Finally, choose the drawer and cabinet pulls to help tie the whole look together. You’ll be amazed at the number of beautiful choices that are available in pulls.

Even if you have an older kitchen, you don’t have to settle for non-existant storage. Add a custom built-in that will add both storage and an interesting architectural feature to the room.
