Add a Built-in Bench to Your Kitchen

Kitchens are often the heart of the home, with friends and family gathering around for meals, coffee, snacks and games. If you frequently have a crowd in your kitchen, you know that seating can become a problem. One way to address this dilemma is by adding a built-in bench area to your kitchen.

Built-ins are a great way to go because you can customize the size and style to your room. Consider the layout of your room and where you would like to locate the bench. If your kitchen is particularly spacious, you could consider adding a bench the same length as your table. This gives you a few options. You could then use the bench as seating for the table. Or, when you have large parties, you could bring in a spare table and put that in front of the bench, while using your regular dining table and chairs for seating as well.

Your home improvement professional could also design a bench area that would wrap around a corner of your room. This makes a cozy little nook perfect for coffee, an impromptu game of cards or as homework central for your kids. Add some snacks and you’re sure to lure in the teen crowd for a visit. It’s also a perfect spot for an informal dinner for two.

You can have your bench built to match your already existing cupboards, or you can paint it in a contrasting color to create a focal point—and a splash of color–in the room. You also need to consider the type of materials you want to use on your bench. You could have the entire structure made from wood with two benches facing each other and a matching table in the middle. Or, you could decide to incorporate some softer cushioning into the seats and backs of the seats. It’s your call.

Another nice option for this home remodeling project is to design the bench so that the seat opens up giving you lots of storage underneath the seats. Who couldn’t use more storage in your kitchen? You could use this for games, linens, spare dishes or infrequently used small appliances or pans, just to name a few things.

A built-in bench could be a versatile addition to your kitchen. Go ahead and invite that big crowd over, because you know you’ll be able to handle the gang with room to spare.
