Splashes of Color

by Jane VanOsdol on January 25, 2011

There’s nothing like a splash of color to wake up a room.  While many of us love to use bright colors in our home décor, not all of us are brave enough to actually use those bright colors on the walls. A logical compromise is to paint the walls with a neutral shade and then add splashes of color throughout the house in the accessories.

Fortunately, you’ll find that painting is one home improvement project that packs a big bang for its buck. You can instantly change the feel of a room for the cost of a can of paint. If you do decide that you want to confine your bright splashes of color to the accessories, then choose a neutral shade for your walls. Today’s neutrals come in a wide range of shades. You could choose the colors that are traditionally thought of as neutral such as the tans, beiges and taupes. Shades of gray are now also a popular neutral. And we’re also seeing pale shades of greens and blues making their way into neutral shades as well. So choose your favorite neutral and then accessorize with bright colors.

One palette you may want to explore starts with a neutral beige color with a hint of pink. A perfect choice is Benjamin Moore’s Georgetown Pink Beige. This is a warm beige with very slight pink undertones, almost a creamy mocha shade. It’s a soothing, calming color that would be a wonderful choice for a bedroom. If you’d rather leave the painting to a professional, hire an expert to manage the interior painting, while you handle the fun part of looking for accessories. Let’s look at some colors to accessorize with.

Some shades that you may want to try as accent colors to work with the neutral Georgetown Pink Beige, include coral, raspberry and taupe. Think of bringing out these colors in the bedding, throw pillows, art work and other accessories. One quilt that could work for your bed is the Tuxedo Ruffle Quilt in coral by Urban Outfitters. Choose some sheets to accent such as the Better Homes and Gardens sheet set in Butter Pecan Floral Damask (either online or in stock at Walmart) and add a few throw pillows. You’ll find a bargain at Cost Plus World Market. Check out their Velvet Toss Pillows in eight different colors, including amber, pumpkin and brown for only $9.99 each. Add a colorful print for your walls, and you’ll have a soothing room alive with vibrant color.

Making your room come alive with color doesn’t have to be—or feel—overwhelming. Simply start with a neutral color and add your splashes of color in the accessories. When you’re tired of those colors, it’s very simple to choose a different color palette by changing out your accessories.
