Update Your Bathroom for Less

by Jane VanOsdol on January 24, 2011

Has your bathroom lost some of its sparkle? Maybe you’re tired of your lackluster tub or your outdated sink and vanity. If you’re ready for an update to a sleek, clean modern look, you may want to consider a line of products by IKEA that will put some zing back into your bathroom.

Sometimes, all it takes is just replacing one tired fixture with a new one to give the whole bathroom an updated look. Add a little paint and perhaps some new curtains, towels or bath rug and you’ll have a fresh look without having to spring for a complete remodel.

One fixture for you to consider is the Godmorgon/Vitviken two-drawer cabinet and sink combination sold by IKEA. The unfussy, clean lines of this unit will definitely modernize the look of your bathroom. It’s available in five colors, so you have several choices, depending upon the look you’d like to create. You can choose from birch veneer, black-brown/white, gray, oak veneer, and white.

This model gets high points for functionality because it contains two sinks and two drawers. The sink is porcelain with a high-gloss foil finish. The drawers open smoothly and the size of the compartments can be adjusted by moving the divider so that you can customize the cabinet to your belongings. The combination unit sells for $429 (faucets sold separately).

If you have sturdy walls, the unit can be installed without legs. IKEA includes an anti-topple device for you to use to help secure the unit to the walls. If you’re not sure if your walls will support the weight of the cabinet, install it with the legs (sold separately).

Black and White Color Scheme

The black-brown/white unit would fit in nicely with a classy black and white update to your bathroom. The cabinet fronts on this unit are white and both sides are black-brown. It would be easy to implement this color scheme throughout your bathroom. Paint the bathroom walls white and accent the bathroom with a few black accessories, such as a rug, soap dispensers and a mirror with black trim. You could also add in some black and white art work. If your tub looks a bit dingy, contact a bathtub refinisher to refinish it and choose the white finish to complement the rest of the bathroom. Bathtub refinishing is much cheaper than purchasing a new tub and will give you like-new results.

By updating one major fixture and adding in some paint and accessories, you’ll have a home improvement at a budget-friendly price.
